A Natural Burial Ground in Simcoe County
Our final act is giving back to the earth,
and protecting nature for future generations.
Fields and forest
Two Fields and a Forest
Among the hills, farmland and forests of Simcoe County is a lovely 95-acre property with two fields and a forest. Both fields will become wildflower meadows, and that’s where the burials will occur. The forested area will offer gentle trails, where you’ll see some gorgeous old trees. The meadows will be all natural, void of cars and tombstones. The entrance to the cemetery, will have parking, a memorial area, and the dairy barn is being converted to become a gathering spot.

What’s Natural Burial?
Buried in a biodegradable casket, or wrapped in a shroud, the body is returned to the earth, where it contributes to the soil’s renewal. Natural burial grounds follow the same laws as the conventional cemeteries, but look entirely different. Imagine a field or forest, restored and protected in its natural eco-habitat. Rows of tombstones and manicured lawn are replaced by trees and tall grasses. Here’s a short video describing natural burial.

Connecting to Nature
At natural burial grounds, families are nudged (not forced!) to participate in the goodbye. This could be by decorating the grave, lowering their loved one, or filling in the grave. This may sound awkward, but people are surprised by how healing it is, and grateful for the opportunity.

Timing
In February, 2026, the Councillors of Oro-Medonte unanimously approved our application for a cemetery! There’s still so much work to do, the township must approve our architectural and landscaping plans and then we must apply to the provincial government for a cemetery license. Our goal is to open in the late spring of 2028. In the meantime, to follow our progress, sign up for e-news updates. We won’t be sending too many notices, because everything does take time, but you can be sure that we’re on the job…trying as best and quickly as we can to create this beautiful final resting place.
